Jan 24-26 Ilo to Moquequa (Mqq)
The move inland has been made and we make a baby step
towards the high country, we do have the option of turning back towards Lima if
needed but for now we are committing to an easterly direction. Mqq is tucked
into a valley between totally barren hills. The river that ends here is the
source of life for all things growing, people included.
The small city is home
to a very active garden and textile market which makes it a very hustle bustle
type of place, at least in the market area. The rest of the town is quiet and
laid back. We decide that we will stay here a few days to get caught up on writing
and maybe just maybe the weather will clear up a bit in Bolivia before we get
there.
Our Hostal is one block off the Plaza de Aramas (principal plaza), but
like many older towns there was never a need for parking, so the bikes get
moved from the street out front into a Cochera for the night then back onto the
street during the day. We wake early as there is a two hour time difference
from across the border but that is okay as the bikes have to be out of the
cochera by 7am anyway.
We check out the market and just can’t believe the amount of
produce that is stacked up, where does it come from and who is eating all this
stuff. The town is only ten thousand people so they must eat well. We do spend a bit of money on
watermelon though, there are street vendor carts that peel the melon into
baggies for us and the price is just too good to resist.
Brenda takes this down time to catch up on her workouts and
maybe sneak in a nap when I am not looking or even if I am. This napping is contagious and soon it seems everywhere we look people are taking a little siesta.
What would the day be without...Dog of the Day. They are small so they count as one. |
