Dec. 26 Caracautin to Dichato
Boxing day sales are not very good here so we decide to try
along the coast somewhere. It is amazing how much the landscape changes in a
few kilometers. We have transitioned from mountains to farmland and then to
Pacific coastline.
The river Bio Bio which starts in Lonquimay, the little town
we visited on the other side of the tunnel runs all the way to the ocean. No
big surprise but what is surprising is how wide it has gotten, it must be at
least a mile across here at Conception.
We generally try to avoid larger cities for a few reasons,
today we are reminded of a couple. The biggest one is construction detours with
no signs indicating how to get around with all the one ways. We end up circling
a couple of times and then the GPS picks a crazy route through a residential
area and then it got very creative by directing us through someones backyard,
through a small garbage dump and then onto a rural road that eventually led us
to the highway and we were back on
course.
The Chilean coast is quite nice in the town of Dichato, they
have put considerable effort into developing the waterfront and the calm water
of the bay make a great location. There are boats moored in the bay and they
bob up and down in the gentle waves. We meet a man from California who is
revisiting this area after a 20yr lapse. He is reconnecting with old friends
and seemed very at peace with the world. We enjoyed a very fresh Mariscos soup
for supper in a little market kitchen near the waterfront, a nice ending to
another great day.
